At the foothills of the Estrella mountains, sits the 1 mile D-shaped tri oval Phoenix International Raceway. When being built in 1964, PIR was intended to be an open wheel track. It wasn’t until 1988 that the NASCAR circuit came to Phoenix International Raceway.
With its’ unique tri oval shape, Phoenix International Raceway has a curve in the middle of the backstretch between turns two and three or more commonly referred to a the “dogleg”. The “dogleg” was built due to the rocky hills located on the property and the addition of an external road course. According to a recent issue of Sports Illustrated, 12% of NASCAR drivers voted PIR as their favorite track which hosts two annual Nascar series events per year. NASCAR fans from all over, flock to the Valley of the Sun to satisfy their need for speed.
When selecting your seat for these races take a second look at seats in the Allison Grandstand Section for two reasons. The first being that you will not need to turn your head to view the entire race and pit road and also the sun will be behind you and not directly in your eyes. The higher the row the better the view. The Jimmy Bryan Section is located dead center of track at the start/finish line with a good view of the pits.
